Flooding- Lagos in for an unpleasant rain experience
Flooding- Lagos in for an unpleasant rain experience.
Parts of Lagos states of Nigeria were marred by heavy flooding at the early stage of the raining season. The month being June, the rain of this magnitude that can course flooding has not been expected yet.
As I went around to find out the effect of that intermittent rain that almost took place for about three to four days in some areas, I happened to storm an area in Bode Thomas street, Surulere.
At the tent hour of the day, the road was flooded to the level that even motorists could not pass through it and some having their vehicles submerged in the water as their engines could no longer fire-up. Passersby were swimming through the flood carefully as the road is also full of holes that can get one injured if he or she misses a step.
Another area was mile 2, where a heavy traffic was met amidst the heavy flooding covering the road.
Residents in some parts were also affected, those living in lower houses have all their properties submerged in water. Mr. Joseph is a man living in Ilaje, Ojo area of Lagos. was forced to park into a new place, abandoning his tenancy that should expire in six months time. When I asked him why he was parking out instead of finding a cheaper solution to the problem, his response was that he can no longer bear it as it has occurred twice in this year , he also said that he has made up his mind to no longer continue living there because his friend has offered him a better place at a good rate.
However, every condition creates it’s own opportunities. While others affected by the flooding were not happy about the condition, some young men found it an opportunity and a temporal job helping the motorists that got stock to push out their vehicles in exchange for a charged amount.
The people are appealing to Lagos State Government, to come quick on some road constructions going on in the state and also to help in opening all the drainages now that it’s still early before July when more heavy and lengthy rains are expected.
